First-person shooter Wolfenstein 3D was created by id Software and first released by Apogee Software. The game was first made available for MS-DOS.

This game is an episodic first-person shooter and as a sequel to the top-down infiltration game Castle Wolfenstein. In the game, the player assumes the role of allied spy B.J. Blazkowicz.

Each episode consists of nine levels, plus a secret level that is accessed by flipping a switch placed somewhere in the first eight levels. Normal levels sometimes include big, hostile sections or a maze-like look where the player must make it to the elevator to leave. To access specific doors, depending on the level, activate "push walls" and/or obtain silver and golden keys.

A level may contain a variety of items, such as medikits, chicken dinners, dog food, ammunition, and treasures. There are four weapons, all of which, with the exception of the knife, use the same ammunition. Dogs, Army Troops, Officers, SS Troopers, and Mutants are the five categories of foes.

The game finishes when the player character loses his last of several lives. The player must either discover the 1-up object in the level or earn 20,000 points to receive more lives.
